GOUNOD (Charles) — Philosophical manuscript on reason and re - Lot 190
GOUNOD (Charles) — Philosophical manuscript on reason and revelation. 1818–1893. French composer. Winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1839. Author of *Faust* (1859). Autograph manuscript devoted to philosophy, reason, and revelation. No place, no date. 3 pages, quarto size, in dense handwriting, with corrections, cross-outs, additions, and underlined passages. IMPORTANT PHILOSOPHICAL MANUSCRIPT ON THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN REASON, REVELATION, AND FAITH. Gounod reflects on the faculties of the human mind, the limits of reason, the role of intelligence and imagination, as well as the place of revelation in the knowledge of truth. “True philosophy consists in recognizing or demonstrating through reason truths known or revealed by revelation. ” He examines the relationship between reason and faith, distinguishing between truths accessible to human intelligence and those that fall within the realm of revelation. He also reflects on human freedom, sin, redemption, and the foundations of Christian morality. “Reason and Revelation are two lights that come from God.” The manuscript presents a structured argument, accompanied by numerous corrections, attesting to a genuine process of reflection and drafting. A remarkable testament to the religious and philosophical concerns of Charles Gounod, whose Catholic faith played an essential role in his life and inspired a significant portion of his musical work. A few creases, slight foxing, and signs of handling.
