DUBRAY (Vital-Gabriel, Marquis known as Vital Dubray) (1813– - Lot 147
DUBRAY (Vital-Gabriel, Marquis known as Vital Dubray) (1813–1892). French sculptor, a student of Jules Ramey. Creator of numerous monumental works, notably the Neptune group, as well as statues and public monuments. Autograph letter signed “Dubray Vital” to “My dear Mr. Tardieu.” No place, April 8, 1864. 3 pages, in-8 format, on laid paper. An interesting letter in which the sculptor reflects on his personal relationships, memories, and artistic concerns. Dubray warmly thanks his correspondent for the welcome he received, recalling with emotion the moments they spent together: “You have never forgotten Vesuvius and the group we formed there; it is an indelible memory.” He then alludes to the criticism and difficulties he has encountered in his artistic career, particularly regarding a statue intended for presentation at the Salon: “I’m afraid […] that I will once again be the target of criticism.” The artist also expresses a desire to see his correspondent again, to whom he extends a friendly invitation: “I was very touched by your kind remembrance […]. I would be happy to see you again. ” This letter attests to the bonds of friendship Dubray maintained with his contemporaries and to a sculptor’s concerns regarding the reception of his works.
