CHARPENTIER (Gustave) (1860–1956). French composer, student - Lot 47
CHARPENTIER (Gustave) (1860–1956). French composer, student of Jules Massenet, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1887, composer of the opera *Louise* (1900). Autograph letter signed “Gustave Charpentier,” addressed to a poet. No place or date. 1 page, in-8, in black ink. A charming letter in which the composer expresses his affection for his correspondent and looks forward to seeing him again in Paris: “But no, my dear poet, I have not forgotten you, nor your kind attentions. I hope to leave next month for the Côte d’Azur; perhaps I will meet you there, or this summer in Paris?… ” He concludes with a warm closing: “Yours fraternally, Gustave Charpentier.” A testament to the friendly and literary relationships maintained by Gustave Charpentier, a prominent figure in French musical life during the Belle Époque. His work, deeply influenced by naturalism and his interest in working-class life, finds its most famous expression in *Louise*, an opera premiered at the Opéra-Comique in 1900, which was a huge success. Beautiful handwriting, clearly legible signature. A few foxing spots and crease marks, with no significant damage to the text.
