BERTON (Henri-Montan) (1767–1844). - Lot 11
BERTON (Henri-Montan) (1767–1844). French composer, member of the Institut, and professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory. Author of numerous comic operas, including *Montano et Stéphanie* and *Le Délire*. L.A.S. “H. Berton” to his colleague Despreaux. No place, no date [first half of the 19th century]. 1 large page, quarto, on engraved letterhead of the Institut Royal de France, adorned with a beautiful vignette depicting Minerva wearing a helmet. An interesting letter concerning a musical audition and the receipt of a comic opera score. Berton thanks his correspondent for sending him a copy of a score intended for the professor, while expressing regret that he cannot attend the performance in person: “I took great pleasure in hearing your opera *La Dame d’honneur*; you were kind enough to offer your old professor a copy of this score; he thanks you very much for your kind and friendly gift, and asks me to tell you on his behalf that reading it has only increased the pleasure he felt upon first hearing it!” He goes on to mention his unsuccessful attempt to take on the role of the professor: “Yes, my friend, I searched in vain throughout your work for a way to play the Professor for a moment, but I could not find one, and so I am reduced to offering only my most sincere compliments to my young colleague. ” The letter ends with an affectionate closing: “Friendship for life,” followed by his signature. A beautiful, musical letter, offering insight into the relationships among composers, teaching, and artistic life within the Institute. The engraved letterhead adds an extra decorative element. A few old creases, slight foxing, and signs of wear. In good overall condition.
