“TWO TICKETS TO… CHARENTON?” - Lot 5
“TWO TICKETS TO… CHARENTON?” ANONYMOUS. Two tickets to… — Charenton? [France or Belgium, circa 1870]. A satirical black-and-white lithograph depicting Napoleon III and a high-ranking church official at the ticket window of the Paris-to-Lyon Railroad, asking for two tickets. The ticket agent replies ironically: “Charenton?” ” A reference to Charenton, whose name was at the time immediately associated with the insane asylum: the caricature thus portrays the two figures as candidates for commitment. Old pencil annotation: “Sacré Eugène,” with an old price indication. Browned paper, foxing, small tears, and a missing corner in the lower right.
