RILKE (Rainer Maria). *SONG OF LOVE AND DEATH OF CHRISTOPH R - Lot 250
RILKE (Rainer Maria). *SONG OF LOVE AND DEATH OF CHRISTOPH RILKE, THE CORNET PLAYER*. Translated by Maurice Betz. Paris, Éditions Émile-Paul Frères, 1964. In-8, XXVII pp., 42 pp., paperback, cream-colored softcover printed in black and red, spine printed in black and red, untrimmed. EDITION OF MAURICE BETZ’S FAMOUS FRENCH TRANSLATION OF CORNETTE CHRISTOPH RILKE. This translation occupies an important place in the French reception of Rilke. Maurice Betz (1898–1946), one of Rilke’s leading French translators, accompanies the text with a lengthy preface in which he reflects, in particular, on his own discovery of *The Cornette* and on the considerable popularity of this brief poetic narrative in Europe. The Bibliothèque nationale de France does indeed list this 1964 Émile-Paul edition, translated by Maurice Betz. Originally written by Rilke in 1899, the text evokes, in highly rhythmic poetic prose, the ride, love, and death of the young cornet player Christoph Rilke, set against the backdrop of the Austro-Turkish War in the 17th century. Having become one of the author’s most popular works, it enjoyed exceptional circulation throughout the German-speaking world. Maurice Betz’s translation was first published by Émile-Paul in 1940; a 1948 edition was printed in a run of 4,000 numbered copies on Johannot pure-fiber vellum and adorned with a frontispiece by Jacques Ernotte. This 1964 edition reproduces Betz’s text and preface in a more understated format, without illustrations. The catalog of the Schweizerisches Rilke-Archiv describes this edition precisely as follows: Émile-Paul Frères, Paris, 1964, XXVII, (3), 42, (2) pages, paperback. Printed on June 30, 1964, by Joseph Floch, master printer in Mayenne, under no. 2169. A NICE COPY PRESERVED IN ITS ORIGINAL PUBLISHER’S BINDING. Cover slightly faded and browned, with a few small foxing spots and superficial soiling, particularly visible on the back cover; spine slightly yellowed. Interior in very good condition, paper still fresh, wide margins, and sturdy binding.
