PLATO — Complete Works. Volume I - Lot 235
PLATO — Complete Works. Volume I PLATO. Complete Works. New translation and notes by Léon Robin. Paris, Gallimard, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, 1940. In-12, XIX-1380 pp.; publisher’s softcover binding in full green leather, smooth spine decorated with gold fillets, title in gold. First edition of this translation in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade and first printing of Volume I, printed on April 24, 1940, at the Imprimerie Union in Paris. This volume is No. 58 in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade. The collection’s critical catalog confirms that this is the first printing of 1940. This first volume of Plato’s Complete Works, translated by Léon Robin, brings together: *The Lesser Hippias*, *The Greater Hippias*, *Ion*, *Protagoras*, *The Apology of Socrates*, *Crito*, *Alcibiades*, *Charmides*, Laches, Lysis, Euthyphro, Gorgias, Menexenus, Meno, Euthydemus, Cratylus, The Symposium, Phaedo, and The Republic, followed by notes. This publication marked Plato’s debut in the Pléiade Library in 1940; the Complete Works would be supplemented by a second volume a few years later. Robin’s translation is one of the major modern French editions of Plato and has long remained a standard reference edition. Copy without dust jacket, in the publisher’s green binding. Spine well-preserved with still-clear gilt lettering. Some scuffing and minor signs of wear on the binding, particularly at the fore-edge and head and foot caps; covers slightly marked. Interior in generally good condition, with a few foxing spots or small marginal marks visible. A fine copy of the rare first printing from 1940.
