COUNTESS OF SÉGUR — The Misfortunes of Sophie - The Model Li - Lot 58
COUNTESS OF SÉGUR — The Misfortunes of Sophie - The Model Little Girls Illustrations by Bertall and Horace Castelli. Paris, Jean de Bonnot, [1986]. A substantial in-8 volume, in the publisher’s original full burgundy leather binding, with extensive polychrome and gilt decoration covering the covers and spine: leafy branches, birds, and scenes of childhood based on the original illustrations; plain spine bearing the title in gilt. Decorated endpapers. Gilt headband. A very attractive edition combining the first two titles in the Sophie series: *Les Malheurs de Sophie*, first published in 1858 with illustrations by Horace Castelli, and *Les Petites Filles modèles*, also published in 1858 and illustrated by Bertall. The text is richly accompanied by vintage illustrations by Bertall and Horace Castelli, reproduced both within the text and as full-page plates. This is a deluxe edition by Jean de Bonnot, whose guarantee page states: “This original edition by Jean de Bonnot is identified by the Roman numeral indicated at the bottom of this page, as well as by the publisher’s signature.” Text printed on paper with a round watermark; hand-finished binding with hand-filled corners; 22-karat gold; hand-crafted gilding tools signed by the engraver. Copy No. CDLXVI, or No. 466, with Jean de Bonnot’s printed/handwritten signature. The “printed” stamp visible on the copy reads: Legal Deposit, 4th quarter 1986 – Publisher No. 1084 – Printer’s No. 110867. This print run can therefore be precisely dated to 1986. A very fine copy. The binding is particularly fresh: well-preserved burgundy leather, very vivid gold and black decoration, clean corners, and a spine with no notable damage. Only a few minute, superficial signs of wear. The interior is very clean and fresh, with bright white paper and perfectly preserved illustrations. This copy is significantly more attractive than many common Jean de Bonnot volumes thanks to its particularly successful polychrome cover decoration.
