BLANC (Louis). A History of Ten Years: 1830–1840. The French - Lot 37
BLANC (Louis). A History of Ten Years: 1830–1840. The French Revolution. Paris, Pagnerre, 1843–1844. 5 in-8 volumes, bound in contemporary brown half-basane, smooth spines adorned with gilt fillets and fleurons, gilt volume numbers, marbled paper covers. The BnF provides a detailed description of the complete five-volume set, published by Pagnerre between 1842 and 1844. An important contemporary collection by Louis Blanc devoted to the first ten years of the July Monarchy, from the Revolution of 1830 through 1840. Published at a time when the author was establishing himself as one of the leading figures of French socialism and of the opposition to Louis-Philippe, this sweeping historical narrative had a considerable impact and contributed to the author’s political prominence. This copy has an interesting bibliographic feature: it combines pages from different editions, a common practice for this work, whose volumes were reprinted as they were published. Volume I is marked as the third edition, volumes II, III, and IV as the second edition, while volume V bears the curious notation “first through fourth editions.” The first four volumes are dated 1843, and the fifth, 1844. This latter version is well-documented with this same edition designation. The work is one of the major political chronicles of the July Monarchy. In it, Louis Blanc recounts, with extensive documentation, the events of 1830, the accession of Louis-Philippe, the struggles between Republicans and Legitimists, the popular uprisings, social and labor issues, ministerial crises, and the major political debates of the decade. Several volumes are supplemented with historical documents. Provenance: Château de La Lande, Viscount P. de Lichy de Lichy, with a purple wet seal on a flyleaf. This historic provenance lends additional interest to this copy. A complete set of the five volumes in uniform period bindings. Decorative spines; the set presents well on a bookshelf. Bindings are rubbed, with scuffing and wear on the caps and joints; a few minor blemishes at the bottom. Foxing is sometimes heavy, particularly on the first and last leaves, as visible in the photographs. Despite these flaws, the set is solid and complete, in its original condition.
