TZARA (Tristan) — SVED (Étienne). EGYPT FACE TO FACE. - Lot 294
TZARA (Tristan) — SVED (Étienne). EGYPT FACE TO FACE. Lausanne, La Guilde du Livre, 1954. In-4 (approx. 28 × 22 cm), 107 pp. and [9] pp., softcover in the publisher’s original binding, with an original photographic dust jacket with flaps, illustrated with a remarkable double portrait combining the profile of an Egyptian sculpture with that of a contemporary young woman. Numerous black-and-white photographs by Étienne Sved, reproduced by heliogravure, either as full-page prints or incorporated into large-scale photographic compositions. FIRST EDITION, printed in a run of 10,000 numbered copies, plus 30 non-commercial copies reserved for members of the Guilde du Livre. The book was published as a non-commercial edition for members of the Guilde. A beautiful photographic book designed by Tristan Tzara and Étienne Sved, systematically juxtaposing Pharaonic Egypt with contemporary Egypt. Ancient representations—bas-reliefs, sculptures, hieroglyphs, and monuments—are paired with Sved’s photographs depicting faces, gestures, trades, and landscapes of 1950s Egypt. This interplay of visual correspondences, particularly evident on the double-page spreads, forms the very essence of the book. The book’s significance thus extends beyond that of a simple documentary work on Egypt: it is a true book of photography constructed through the montage and juxtaposition of images, to which Tzara’s text adds a poetic and anthropological dimension. The spectacular dust jacket featuring a “double portrait” is fully integral to this graphic design. This copy comes from the La Providence library in Amiens, with several library stamps on the endpapers, half-title page, title page, and within the text, as well as an old handwritten call number. It is complete with its original photographic dust jacket, which is a plus: the dust jacket shows some scuffing and minor marginal wear; the interior is well-preserved overall. The library stamps, some of which are stamped directly onto the illustrated pages, nevertheless constitute a notable flaw for a photobook collector.
