SÉJOURNÉ (Laurette). — Teotihuacan: Metropolis of the Americ - Lot 280
SÉJOURNÉ (Laurette). — Teotihuacan: Metropolis of the Americas. Paris, François Maspero, 1969. Large quarto, publisher’s cloth binding with a color-illustrated dust jacket, large black-and-white illustration in the text and a full-page illustration, maps, archaeological plans, and numerous reproductions of pre-Columbian decorations and motifs. Original French edition, published in 1969 by François Maspero; the BnF lists it as No. 1 in the series. An important monograph devoted to Teotihuacan, one of the major urban and religious centers of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. In it, Laurette Séjourné compiles and synthesizes her archaeological research on the site, to which she devoted a significant portion of her work. The book addresses, in particular, the city’s organization, its monumental architecture, ceramics, murals, and religious symbolism, with significant attention given to Nahuatl cosmogony and the figure of Quetzalcóatl. The bibliographic references support the sections devoted to the archaeology of Teotihuacan, Nahuatl cosmogony, and the conception of divinity. The book features extensive visual documentation, including general and comparative maps, archaeological drawings, and reconstructions of murals and decorative motifs. The illustrations are primarily by Graciela Salicrup, Abel Mendoza, and Manuel Romero, whose contributions are specifically noted in the BnF catalog entry. This book is one of Séjourné’s major French-language publications on Teotihuacan, following *La Pensée des anciens Mexicains* (1966), his research on ceramics, and his Mexican studies on the site’s architecture and painting. A very complete copy with its spectacular original dust jacket, which is particularly decorative and printed in black, white, and red. Some scuffing and minor signs of wear on the dust jacket, mainly on the flaps and corners; the hardcover and interior are in good condition.
