SEGALEN (Victor), GILBERT DE VOISINS (Auguste), & LARTIG - Lot 279
SEGALEN (Victor), GILBERT DE VOISINS (Auguste), & LARTIGUE (Jean) — Archaeological Mission to China (1914 and 1917). Atlas. Paris, Librairie orientaliste Paul Geuthner, 1923–1924. 2 large folio volumes (approx. 40 × 29 cm), loose-leaf, in the publisher’s cardboard covers with cloth spines and laces. Volume I: Sculpture and Funerary Monuments (Shaanxi and Shaanxi Provinces). XI-[1] pp. and 68 plates numbered I through LXVIII. Volume II: Funerary Monuments (Nanjing Region). Buddhist Monuments (Sseu-tch'ouan Province). [4] pp. and 76 plates numbered LXIX to CXLIV. That is, 144 plates, mainly photographs, reproducing the monuments, sculptures, bas-reliefs, funerary pillars, and Buddhist complexes studied during the expeditions to China led by Victor Segalen, Auguste Gilbert de Voisins, and Jean Lartigue in 1914 and 1917. The collation and arrangement of the plates correspond to the institutional copies described by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. First edition of this important work on French archaeology in China. The first atlas, published in 1923, is devoted primarily to the sculpture and funerary monuments of Shanxi and Sichuan; the second, published in 1924, to the funerary monuments of the Nanjing region and the Buddhist monuments of Sichuan. The two atlases constitute the fundamental iconographic component of the mission’s findings. Since Segalen died in 1919, their publication was posthumous; the work was to be supplemented by volumes of text, of which only *Funeral Art in the Han Dynasty* would later appear, in 1935. A very complete copy of both atlases, preserved in their original publisher’s slipcases with drawstrings. Some foxing and pinholes, more noticeable on certain introductory pages; a few small marks and marginal soiling. The cover of Volume I is worn, scuffed, and shows some superficial damage; that of Volume II is better preserved. The photographic plates are, on the whole, very crisp and well-preserved, with wide margins. A rare and sought-after set, of particular interest for the history of archaeology, Sinology, and, of course, the bibliography of Victor Segalen.
