SALMON (Pierre) Black Africa: History and Culture. - Lot 273
SALMON (Pierre) Black Africa: History and Culture. With contributions by D. Cahen, A.-C. Dero, A. Gérard, A. Godart, H. Nicolaï, P. Timmermans, and J. Vansina. Brussels, Éditions Meddens, 1976. Large in-4 volume (approx. 29 cm), publisher’s binding with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket, 220 pp., abundant black-and-white and color photographs. Bibliography pp. 217–218. First edition. ISBN 2-87013-007-4. These details are confirmed by several institutional catalogs. A major collective synthesis devoted to the history, societies, and cultures of sub-Saharan Africa, edited by Pierre Salmon (1926–2005), professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles. The book’s significance lies in particular in the caliber of its contributors, who come from a variety of disciplines. Of particular note is Jan Vansina, a leading figure in the history and anthropology of Central Africa, alongside Daniel Cahen, Albert Gérard, André Godart, Henri Nicolaï, and Pierre Timmermans. The academic bibliography confirms this collective authorship. The book approaches the continent from a very broad perspective: geography and natural environments, prehistory and archaeology, history, social and political structures, languages and literatures, religions, and the arts. The illustrations constitute a significant part of the book, featuring numerous ethnographic views and reproductions of works of art: sculptures, Benin and Ifé bronzes, masks, ritual objects, and artistic creations from various regions. The photographs you are showing reveal, in particular, several remarkable pieces of Nigerian art, including a Yoruba copper statuette, a Benin bronze leopard, and a copper head from Ifé. A fine copy, in very fresh condition inside. The publisher’s binding is well-preserved. The original dust jacket is present, with a few minor signs of handling and rubbing, particularly on the upper part, but with no apparent major damage. Overall, a very presentable copy.
