SAINT BERNARD — THE SPIRIT OF CÎTEAUX - Lot 272
SAINT BERNARD — THE SPIRIT OF CÎTEAUX BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX (Saint). — The Spirit of Cîteaux. Saint Bernard on the “Song of Songs.” Introduction by Raymond Oursel. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “Les Points cardinaux” series, no. 26, 1978. Square in-4 (approx. 26 × 22 cm), 196 pp., publisher’s full cloth binding, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket. Abundant photographic illustrations, including approximately 80 pages of plates, mainly in black and white, with several color plates. The BnF confirms the colation of 196 pages, including 80 pages of plates and 4 folios of color plates. First edition. A beautiful volume from the renowned “Les Points cardinaux” series, devoted to Cistercian architecture and spirituality. The book brings together excerpts from Saint Bernard of Clairvaux’s Sermons on the Song of Songs, accompanied by an introduction by art historian Raymond Oursel. The extensive photographic documentation particularly highlights the monumental simplicity of Cistercian architecture: abbeys, cloisters, churches, chapter houses, vaults, and the play of light. The cover notably features Sénanque Abbey. The layout, alternating between full-page photographs and texts by Saint Bernard, is characteristic of Zodiaque’s most successful publications. A good copy. The book block is clean and well-preserved. The dust jacket is present, with scuffing, small tears, and wear on the headbands, corners, and edges; some marks and normal soiling, particularly on the front cover. The binding remains sturdy.
