OBERLÉ (Philippe). — Malagasy Provinces: Art, History, Touri - Lot 240
OBERLÉ (Philippe). — Malagasy Provinces: Art, History, Tourism. Riedisheim, Éditions Kintana, 1979. Large quarto, 228 pp., publisher’s cloth-bound edition covered in pink cloth, with a beige cloth spine bearing the title, and a large decorative monogram stamped in black on the front cover. First edition, printed in a run of 1,500 copies, completed in Antananarivo in May 1979 on the presses of the Société Malgache d’Édition. Preface by Dr. Césaire Rabenoro, president of the Malagasy Academy. Layout by Christian Borboën. Extensive documentary illustrations comprising 334 black-and-white illustrations and 10 color illustrations, for a total of 344 images listed in contemporary bibliographic references. A comprehensive historical, artistic, ethnographic, and tourist overview of Madagascar, focusing on the various regions of the island outside of Imerina, to which Philippe Oberlé had dedicated a first volume in 1976. The book examines, in turn, the origins of settlement, the various peoples and provinces, their traditions, architecture, natural sites, and the history of the European presence. In particular, it contains a wealth of historical documentation on Fort-Dauphin, Diego-Suarez, the Betsileo region, the coastal populations, the Sakalava, the Vézo, and southern Madagascar. The volume is supplemented by an index, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. Upon its publication, the *Journal des Africanistes* highlighted the quality of its illustrations and the thoroughness of its documentation. This work is a follow-up to *Tananarive et l’Imerina* (1976) and remains an interesting photographic record of Madagascar on the eve of the profound transformations of the late 20th century. A good copy. A few small marks and scuffs on the cardboard cover; the spine cloth is slightly faded; interior is clean. Original price of 150 F written in pencil on the endpaper.
