MASTERPIECES OF AFRICAN ART - Lot 222
MASTERPIECES OF AFRICAN ART Masterpieces of African Art. Brooklyn, The Brooklyn Museum, 1954. In-4, paperback, illustrated cover in yellow and black. Catalog published in conjunction with the major exhibition “Masterpieces of African Art,” held at the Brooklyn Museum from October 21, 1954, to January 2, 1955. The catalog is richly illustrated with black-and-white photographic reproductions, presenting a vast collection of sculptures, masks, and objects primarily from West and Central Africa. A map indicates the geographic origins of the exhibited works. Several pieces came from major public and private collections, notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, and the J. J. Klejman Gallery. This catalog is significant in the history of the recognition of African art in the United States: the exhibition brought together works from international collections and ranks among the most notable events organized by the Brooklyn Museum’s African Department in the 1950s. Several works featured in this catalog continue to be cited by their exhibition numbers in scholarly bibliographies. First edition of the exhibition catalog. Cover is yellowed and slightly rubbed, with minor soiling and old pencil marks. Quite a few foxing spots, particularly on the first few pages and in the margins of several plates; some signs of wear. Nevertheless, a complete and sturdy copy.
