KERCHACHE (Jacques) & FOUCHET (Max-Pol) — The Head. Amer - Lot 179
KERCHACHE (Jacques) & FOUCHET (Max-Pol) — The Head. America, Oceania, Africa KERCHACHE (Jacques) & FOUCHET (Max-Pol). The Head. America, Oceania, Africa. Text by Max-Pol Fouchet. Paris, Galerie Jacques Kerchache, 53 rue de Seine, 1966. Large in-4, paperback, [23] unnumbered leaves, illustrated cover, 44 black-and-white photographic reproductions, and maps. First edition of the catalog for the exhibition “La Tête,” held at the Galerie Jacques Kerchache in May–June 1966, devoted to representations of the head in the arts of the Americas, Oceania, and Africa. The exhibition and the catalog are well cataloged by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. A particularly interesting catalog in the history of the reception of primitive arts in France. This was one of the very first exhibitions organized by Jacques Kerchache (1942–2001), then a very young art dealer, who would go on to become one of the key figures in the institutional recognition of the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas in France. The text was written by Max-Pol Fouchet, a writer, art critic, and avid traveler, whose official bibliography includes *La Tête dans les arts d’Océanie, d’Amérique et d’Afrique* (Paris: Kerchache, 1966). The book reproduces 44 works, accompanied by brief descriptions, and organizes its content geographically across the Americas, Oceania, and Africa. The photograph shown here features, in particular, No. 18: a Tlingit ritual rattle from British Columbia, made of painted wood. A Catalog That Has Become a Reference for Provenance This is likely the strongest bibliophilic and commercial argument for this copy: this small 1966 publication continues to be cited today in the catalogs of major international auctions to establish the provenance of significant works. The Tlingit rattle no. 18—specifically the one visible in your photograph—has thus reappeared on the market with the provenance “Galerie Jacques Kerchache, La Tête, May–June 1966” and an estimate of €30,000 to €50,000. Even more recently, a Tsogho reliquary head from Gabon was documented by Christie’s as reproduced in this catalog on p. 42, no. 43, confirming its status as a bibliographic reference for the provenance of important works. This lends the catalog a significance that far exceeds that of a mere 1960s exhibition booklet. A complete copy in its original binding. The cover is slightly yellowed and soiled, with small creases, scuff marks, and signs of wear. There is a small horizontal tear on the left side of the front cover and a small tear/crease in the lower right corner. A few marks and creases are also visible inside, particularly along the bottom margins of some pages. Nevertheless, the book is in fair condition and perfectly usable, given the fragility of this large-format paperback publication.
