HOPPENOT (Hélène) MEXICO. MAYA MAGIC. - Lot 161
HOPPENOT (Hélène) MEXICO. MAYA MAGIC. Introduction by Jacques Soustelle. Historical note by Miguel Covarrubias. Lausanne, La Guilde du Livre, 1954. Quarto format, approximately 28 × 22 cm, publisher’s hardcover, with an illustrated photographic dust jacket, a map of Mexico as a frontispiece, 16 pp. of text, and 80 photographic plates, mostly full-page, reproduced by heliogravure. FIRST EDITION, published non-commercially for members of the Guilde du Livre, in a limited run of 10,000 numbered copies. A beautiful photographic album dedicated to Mexico and Mayan civilization, featuring photographs by Hélène Hoppenot (1894–1990), with an introduction by ethnologist Jacques Soustelle and a historical note by Mexican artist and anthropologist Miguel Covarrubias. The book combines views of major pre-Columbian sites, monumental architecture, sculptures, and glimpses into contemporary Mexican life. Hélène Hoppenot, wife of diplomat Henri Hoppenot, created a body of documentary photography during their many stays abroad that has now been rediscovered. Mexico. *Magie Maya* is part of the remarkable series of photographic books she published in the 1940s and 1950s; the Diplomatic Archives list this edition as having been published in 1954, and the Rijksmuseum holds it in its library as a photographic book devoted to Mexico and Maya culture. The photographs, which are particularly well-crafted, feature Teotihuacán, Mayan pyramids and sanctuaries, architecture, monumental sculptures, landscapes, and scenes of daily life. The work is thus as much a book on archaeology as it is a true 1950s photobook. This copy comes with its original photographic dust jacket, a welcome feature. The dust jacket has some scuffing, small tears, and signs of wear, particularly along the top and bottom edges and at the corners; the interior is in good condition.
