Men of Prehistory — Exhibition Catalog - Lot 160
Men of Prehistory — Exhibition Catalog MEN OF PREHISTORY. Brussels, Studio 44, Passage 44, [n.d., circa 1960s]. In-4°, paperback, color-illustrated cover, stapled spine, black-and-white photographic illustrations in the text. Catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition “Men of Prehistory,” held at Studio 44, Passage 44 in Brussels, from April 30 to June 1. A popular science publication devoted to the major stages of human evolution recognized at the time and to paleoanthropological discoveries: Australopithecus, Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and early Homo sapiens. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of skulls, fossil remains, and archaeological artifacts; of particular note is the reproduction of the famous Spy Man, discovered in Belgium. The catalog offers an interesting snapshot of paleoanthropology in the mid-20th century: its terminology and certain classifications— “Archanthropians,” “Pithecanthropes,” “Zinjanthropus,” etc.—reflect the state of knowledge and scientific debates of the time. Fair condition. Cover shows stains, scuffing, and signs of wear; there is a small tear along the left edge of the front cover and wear on the corners. The back cover is quite worn and soiled. Some foxing and interior stains. The original price of “25” is written in pencil on the title page.
