BRETON (André) & ÉLUARD (Paul) — The André Breton and Pa - Lot 58
BRETON (André) & ÉLUARD (Paul) — The André Breton and Paul Éluard Collection. Sculptures from Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Room No. 9, July 2 and 3, 1931. Alphonse Bellier, auctioneer; Charles Ratton, Louis Carré, and Georges F. Keller, experts. In-4° (approx. 28 cm), paperback with a typographic cover printed in red and black, 50 pp., 24 black-and-white plates, and a large fold-out map. An important catalog. This is the original catalog of the famous auction of the collection of André Breton and Paul Éluard, not a later facsimile. The INHA’s institutional collation confirms 312 lots, 24 plates, and one map. The auction held on July 2 and 3, 1931, represents a major milestone in the history of the Surrealist taste for the arts then described as “primitive.” The 312 lots cover Africa, Oceania, pre-Columbian America, North America, and various other regions. Charles Ratton, who would go on to become one of the leading figures in the recognition of African and Oceanic art in France, served as an expert for this auction. The 24 photographic plates reproduce approximately one hundred of the objects in the collection. Some of the pieces documented in this catalog are now part of major public collections: the Centre Pompidou, for example, directly cites the 1931 Breton-Éluard catalog in the provenance record for an ivory necklace that once belonged to Breton. Complete copy, including the large fold-out map. Condition Fair condition, but acceptable for this rare catalog. Original cover preserved, browned and slightly stained, with rub marks, creases, and wear along the edges. Spine and hinges are noticeably weakened; the photographs show significant delamination and cracking where the book block meets the cover. Corners are rounded. Small handwritten annotation “1931” in pencil. On the other hand, the interior is in fairly good condition, the photographic plates are well preserved, and the large map is included.
