BARRÈS (Maurice), *Un Amateur d'âmes*. - Lot 31
BARRÈS (Maurice), *Un Amateur d'âmes*. Illustrations by L. Dunki, woodcuts by the Société des Graveurs sur Bois L'Image. Paris, E. Fasquelle, 1899. Large 8vo, paperback, illustrated cover with embossed design. A very fine illustrated edition of one of the most representative works from Maurice Barrès’s early period. Published at the end of the 19th century, *Un Amateur d’âmes* is part of a series of works in which the writer from Lorraine explores the themes of sensitivity, introspection, and the quest for exceptional personalities, developing this cult of the self that would secure his literary fame. Through a series of psychological reflections and meditations imbued with subtle symbolism, Barrès strives to capture the nuances of the human soul—its impulses, contradictions, and secret aspirations. The work reflects the fin-de-siècle aesthetic, where inner analysis, a taste for art, and a constant search for individual uniqueness converge. This edition, published by Fasquelle, is enriched by the remarkable illustrations by L. Dunki, woodcuts created by several of the finest artisans of the Société des Graveurs sur Bois L’Image. The compositions, in a decidedly Art Nouveau and Symbolist style, complement the text admirably and contribute to the book’s refined atmosphere. They offer a particularly interesting testament to the revival of wood engraving in France at the end of the 19th century. The delicate illustrated cover, also designed by the artist, lends the volume a particularly appealing bibliophilic character. The publications of the L’Image Society are among the most representative works of the Belle Époque illustrated book movement. This copy is preserved in its original wide-margin brochure, with an illustrated endpaper. There are a few slight signs of age on the cover; the interior is fresh. An elegant illustrated edition of an emblematic text by the early Barrès, combining Symbolist literature with the revival of French decorative engraving on the eve of the 20th century.
