DEHÉRAIN (Pierre-Paul). - Lot 33
DEHÉRAIN (Pierre-Paul). Born in Paris, 1830-1902. French agronomist, member of the Académie des Sciences since 1887, specialist in agricultural chemistry and plant physiology. L.A.S. "P. P. Dehérain" addressed to Dr. Léon Labbé. Paris, October 4, 1902. 2 pages in-8. Important letter concerning the electoral maneuvers surrounding the allocation of a vacant seat at the Académie des Sciences, in which Dehérain actively supports the candidacy of surgeon and senator Léon Labbé. The scientist informs his correspondent of the steps he has taken in academic circles: "Your letter ran behind me, Traulais sent it to me as I was returning to Paris". He insisted on the urgency of taking action so as not to "let the indifferent get involved with Prince Roland", i.e. Prince Roland Bonaparte, then an influential candidate for the Académie. The letter precisely reveals the networks of support and balances of power within the institution. Dehérain discusses Picard's interventions, the visits to be made to academics, and the support already gained: "the votes of Moissan, Brilleux and Berthelot are his". He also analyzes the hesitations of physicist Janssen, who he believes is likely to support Prince Roland "who helped him build his observatory". This document offers a particularly vivid account of the strategies of influence, alliances and rivalries within the French scholarly world at the beginning of the 20th century, at the frontier between science, politics and social networks. A fine letter from a leading academician, revealing the electoral backstage at the Académie des Sciences on the eve of Dehérain's death a few months later.
