MARITIME TRADE - Lot 27
MARITIME TRADE [MARITIME TRADE]. Bill of lading signed in part autograph "Giuseppe Lagorio et Bartolomeo Figlio". Italy, Port-Maurice (Ligurian coast), October 25, 1806. 1 page in-8 oblong on laid paper. Beautiful woodcut vignette depicting a galleon under full sail. Very interesting sea freight bulletin from Port-Maurice on the Ligurian coast to Agde, testifying to the Mediterranean oil trade in the early 19th century. The document notes the loading, "in the name of God", of a cargo of olive oil carried aboard the "Vinque" Saint Antoine, captained by "French" Captain Joseph Lagorio, for delivery to "Messieurs Pierre Bousquet & Fils & Cie". The text specifies the freight terms, the condition of the goods and their packaging: "six new pieces well strapped with four iron hoops each containing together forty-eight barrels [...] clear and lampante surfine paillerine olive oil filled to the bung and very well packaged". This remarkable commercial document illustrates trade between Liguria and southern France under the Empire, at a time when Italian oils from Port-Maurice enjoyed a superior reputation among French merchants. The presence of the large engraved naval vignette, combined with the merchant calligraphy and autographs, makes this a particularly decorative document, evocative of Mediterranean maritime trade. The bill of lading - forerunner of the modern "bill of lading" - was the official acknowledgement of the goods shipped, legally binding carrier, shipper and consignee. In good condition, despite a small marginal loss at the left edge of the leaf, with no damage to the text.
