CARNOT, Hippolyte (1801-1888). Republican politician, Minist - Lot 16
CARNOT, Hippolyte (1801-1888). Republican politician, Minister of Public Instruction under the Second Republic, Member of Parliament and influential figure in the liberal democratic movement. Important autograph letter signed and addressed to a close political collaborator, without precise date or place, but written in the context of an election campaign under the Second Empire. A long and remarkable political letter in which Hippolyte Carnot discusses with frankness and precision the organization of an electoral campaign, the balance of power between Republican candidates, the support of workers, as well as questions of strategy and political financing. In particular, the signatory writes: "The image is full of your memory, my dear friend; our supporters print it on your account with enthusiasm and our opponents with propriety." Carnot goes on to describe the efforts undertaken to rally workers and organize a support fund intended for election periods: "The workers made contributions among themselves to form a reserve fund intended to compensate those of them who, at election time, would be obliged to neglect their work to distribute ballots." The letter is a particularly vivid account of 19th-century republican campaigning practices: popular financing, electoral propaganda, negotiations between candidates and local networks of influence. Carnot also mentions a number of political figures and intermediaries involved in electoral dealings. Finally, there are broader political considerations, notably on the situation in Spain: "Business seems to be going well in Spain. It would be curious if that country were to give us the example of the separation of church and state. Very fine set of three in-8 pages handwritten in black ink, signed "Carnot". A few folds and traces of use; overall good condition. A document of real historical interest on the mechanisms of Republican political life under the Second Empire and the militant networks preceding the advent of the Third Republic.
