CAIGNIEZ, Louis-Charles (1762-1842). French dramatist and pl - Lot 12
CAIGNIEZ, Louis-Charles (1762-1842). French dramatist and playwright, famous for his popular boulevard melodramas. Autograph letter signed to the Commission des auteurs dramatiques, Belleville, March 31, 1838; 2 pages in-4 with address on verso and postmarks. Charming letter in which the elderly playwright regretfully declines an invitation from the Commission des auteurs. Caigniez writes movingly of his advanced age and frequent indispositions: "an indisposition, too often renewed in the advanced age to which I have reached forbids me the satisfaction of finding myself tomorrow [...]" Nevertheless, he offers his encouragement to young playwrights, and is delighted to see "the good spirit" of the theatrical career continue: "the young talents who today have the good spirit to extend the bounds of the dramatic career [...]" The playwright also evokes the "gais refrains de nos aimables chansonniers" and shows a keen sympathy for the Parisian theatrical milieu, to which he remains attached despite his gradual withdrawal. The author's handsome signature at the bottom of the letter reads: "Votre trop ancien, mais toujours dévoué confrère". A touching document, offering a late testimony to one of the great popular authors of French melodramatic theater in the first half of the 19th century. With autograph address on verso to: "Monsieur le Secrétaire de la commission des auteurs, chez Monsieur Guizot, agent des auteurs dramatiques, rue Vivienne n°18 à Paris". Some foxing and traces of folding; satisfactory condition.
