CABANÈS (Augustin). Born in Gourdon (Lot), 1862-1928. Physic - Lot 11
CABANÈS (Augustin). Born in Gourdon (Lot), 1862-1928. Physician, journalist and historian of French medicine. L.A.S. "A. Cabanès" to "Monsieur". Paris, January 28, 1890. 1 p. in-8 on letterhead of La Chronique médicale, of which he was then director and editor-in-chief. Old printed address crossed out and hand-corrected: "149, avenue du Maine". Pleasant letter of transmittal concerning La Chronique médicale magazine and a religious engraving that caught his correspondent's attention: "J'vous envoie ce jour 2 exemplaires du n° de la "Chronique" contenant la gravure de la Vierge qui vous avez intéressé...". The doctor explained that he was unable to satisfy the demand any further, as the copies were almost sold out: "the n° being at this hour almost sold out; I have about ten left outside the collections." He goes on to mention a number of current publishing projects: "I haven't received the brochure you're talking about. The printing plate has not yet come back from the printer. I don't know anything about the divining rod...". A doctor with a passion for history, Augustin Cabanès founded La Chronique médicale in 1894, a magazine combining medical erudition, historical anecdotes and scientific curiosities, which enjoyed great success during the Belle Époque. His works on the "great neuropaths" and the physicians of sovereigns helped popularize the history of medicine among a broad, cultured readership. A beautiful, well-preserved letter, with clear, energetic writing, testifying to the intellectual and editorial medical networks of the late 19th century.
