BAROCHE, Pierre-Jules - Lot 3
BAROCHE, Pierre-Jules Pierre-Jules Baroche Rare handwritten and printed proclamation from the Government of National Defense concerning Prussian dispatches intercepted during the siege of Paris. S.d. [December 1870]. 1 large printed folio page with important handwritten additions. Curious and remarkable propaganda and information document published during the Franco-Prussian war. The text recounts the departure of the "Daguerre" balloon from besieged Paris to Louviers and the recovery of carrier pigeons carrying dispatches that had fallen into Prussian hands: "There is no doubt about the identity of the pigeons collected with two of the pigeons taken in Louviers by the Prussians." The document then reproduces two alarmist dispatches attributed to Prussian agents and intended to demoralize the French population: "Rouen occupied by Prussians... Bourges and Tours threatened... famine and mourning..." The government emphasized the manipulative nature of these messages, insisting on their "Germanic origin", both "in the style and form of the writing". A fine piece of historical evidence of disinformation and psychological warfare during the 1870 siege of Paris. Mixture of official letterpress printing and lengthy contemporary autograph annotations. Some marginal foxing, otherwise in good condition.
