ROUSSEAU (Jacques-Rodolphe) - Lot 261
ROUSSEAU (Jacques-Rodolphe) Born in Paris, 1893 - date of death unknown. Publisher, former president of the Cercle de la Librairie. Set of 2 pieces, 1937 L.A.S. from Jacques-Rodolphe Rousseau to "Mon cher confrère" [Bernard Grasset], Paris, March 8, 1937, 1 page in-8, on Syndicat des Éditeurs / Hôtel du Cercle de la Librairie letterhead, fine blue ink. Typescript of Bernard Grasset's reply, March 12, 1937, 1 ½ page in-4. Very interesting exchange relating to the publication of an article in La Revue de Paris, and above all to professional debates concerning the duration of literary property and the consequences of a possible legislative reduction. The duplicate of Grasset's reply contains this particularly significant passage: "the reduction in the duration of literary property expropriates us". as well as the mention of a possible : "collective action for damages". A collection of primary interest for the history of French publishing, copyright and the positions taken by Bernard Grasset in the face of the reform proposals put forward by Jean Zay.
