REVEL (Jean, Paul Toutain, dit) - Lot 251
REVEL (Jean, Paul Toutain, dit) [NORMANDIE] REVEL (Jean, Paul Toutain, dit) Conteville (Eure), 1848 - Rouen, 1925. Norman writer, notary in Rouen, president of the Rouen Chamber of Notaries. Set of 3 L.A.S. and 3 autograph cards signed, Rouen, 1891-1896, sold as a single lot. A fine set of documents relating to Jean-Paul Toutain, known as Revel, a figure of Rouen's scholarly world at the end of the 19th century, including: two autograph letters signed on notary letterhead, "Paul Toutain, Notaire, 17 quai de la Bourse, Rouen", dated August 13 and October 27, 1891; an autograph letter signed on Société Normande de Géographie letterhead, dated August 4, 1896; three autograph visiting cards, also signed, enclosed. The set mainly concerns relations with the Société Normande de Géographie, requests for admission and presentation of members, and the material organization of meetings of learned societies in Rouen. They include a request for membership of the Société Normande de Géographie, the recommendation of Mr. Hervé, a Rouen chartered surveyor, and various considerations relating to scholarly meetings and the provision of rooms. One of the letters also mentions the Vélo-Club rouennais, which requested that its fortnightly meeting be held at the Hôtel de société savante, an interesting testimony to Rouen's associative sociability during the Belle Époque. A fine, well-preserved, homogeneous collection of real interest for the cultural and scholarly history of Normandy.
