NISARD (Théodore). - Lot 199
NISARD (Théodore). Quaregnon (Belgium), 1812 - 1888. Priest, choirmaster, organist and musicologist. Autograph letter signed "Th. Nisard" addressed to Abbé Jean-Sébastien Devoucoux (1804-1870), canon of Autun Cathedral. Montpellier, January 20, 1851. 2 pages in-8. Interesting letter concerning Théodore Nisard's musicological research, in which he thanks his correspondent for his welcome in Autun and discusses his work in progress: "I shall never forget it... in my work, I shall always like to remember it as an honor and an encouragement..." He says he is preparing a report for the Minister of Public Instruction, but points out that he lacks two essential documents: - a copy of the treatise on music at the end of Boèce's Treatise, - a precise transcription of the musical notations on the banners of the Golden Chapel, including the Regina Coeli laetare. He insists on the scientific importance of these pieces and requests their careful collation, adding: "It is a service we are here to render to science...". A fine letter illustrating the beginnings of scholarly musicology in the 19th century, as well as the networks of ecclesiastical scholars engaged in the study of ancient sources.
