NICOLLE (Henri). - Lot 197
NICOLLE (Henri). Born in Fresquienne, 1767 - died 1829. Bookseller, director of Collège Sainte-Barbe in Paris, a major institution of higher education under the Empire and Restoration, training many intellectual and administrative figures. Autograph letter signed "H. Nicolle, directeur de collège". Paris, November 14, 1821. 1 page in-4. Administrative attestation from the director of Collège Sainte-Barbe, concerning the situation of a student. Nicolle certifies that "Monsieur Henri François Rosley resides in our college" and that he is authorized by his father "to do his law", vouching for the interested party himself ("Je me déclare son répondant"). This type of document, both academic and legal, illustrates the administrative practices of Parisian education in the early 19th century, particularly in the context of law studies. A typical example of the workings of the capital's major educational institutions, it testifies to the role of college principals as moral and administrative authorities.
