MÉJAN, Étienne Pierre, Count - Lot 175
MÉJAN, Étienne Pierre, Count (Montpellier, February 11, 1766 - Munich, August 19, 1846) Senior civil servant, lawyer and journalist, contributor to the Moniteur universel, Officer of the Legion of Honor. Autograph letter signed "Méjan", as Secretary General, addressed to citoyen Feneyaux, Senator. Paris, 21 frimaire an X [12 decembre 1801]. 1 page in-4, printed on the letterhead of the Préfecture de la Seine, with a suscription and red wax seal on verso. A fine administrative letter, typical of the Consulate, written under an official letterhead bearing the motto "Liberté - Égalité" and the words "République française, une et indivisible". In it, Méjan, then Secretary General, responds diligently to a request from Senator Feneyaux: "I'll take care of the matter you're interested in, all other business ceasing", offering to deliver the requested decree later today. The tone, both respectful and eager, illustrates the workings of the administrative machinery in Paris in the early XIXᵉ century, against a backdrop of increasing centralization of power. This document bears witness to Méjan's administrative career under the Consulate, before his rallying to the imperial regime and then his role with Eugène de Beauharnais in Italy. It is also of material interest for its official letterhead and postmark, typical of administrative correspondence of the period.
