LESCOUVE (Théodore) - Lot 157
LESCOUVE (Théodore) Aix-en-Provence, 1864 - 1940. French civil servant and magistrate. Autograph letter signed "Th. Lescouve", addressed to a friend. Paris, October 31, 1923. 1 page in-8, on letterhead of the Paris Court of Appeal. A short but elegant letter of thanks in which Lescouve expresses his gratitude for the congratulations he has received, which he modestly considers "too indulgent", while emphasizing the particular value of the token of friendship that accompanies them. The tone, sober and distinguished, is characteristic of epistolary usage in the judicial world at the beginning of the twentieth century. He concludes with a warmly polite phrase - "Je vous serre bien cordialement la main" - which lends this bill a personal and sincere dimension that goes beyond mere formal correspondence. A leading magistrate, Théodore Lescouve headed the Paris Court of Appeal from 1917 to 1923, before becoming President of the Court of Cassation, which makes this document even more interesting for the history of the French judiciary.
