LANGLOIS (Victor) - Lot 136
LANGLOIS (Victor) Born Dieppe, 1829 - died 1869. Orientalist and numismatist, recognized specialist in Armenian studies. Autograph letter signed "V. Langlois", addressed to "Monsieur" [Dieppe librarian]. Paris, September 26, 1862. 4 pages in-8. Long, interesting letter concerning acquisitions and exchanges of works for the library in Dieppe, Langlois's native town, to which he remains closely attached. In it, he describes the steps he had taken with the Ministry of State to obtain missing volumes ("Greek novels") and incomplete deliveries, while stressing the administrative difficulties arising from the reorganization of the Education Department. Langlois also recommends applying directly to the Minister, Mr. Rouland, and evokes the customs of the world of letters and administrations. A large part of the letter concerns the "Classiques Didot", whose purchase he proposes at the publisher's price, asking in return for a precise list of desired titles. He even addresses the material issues of publishing (large or small paper), giving an indication of price ("around 12 to 15 francs" for small paper). The letter concludes with personal considerations - health impaired by a stay in the Orient, plans to return to Dieppe - as well as news from the scholarly world (Abbé Cochet, etc.) and the announcement of the forthcoming dispatch of his Cartulaire de l'Arménie, then being printed in Venice. Very representative of book circulation, scholarly networks and bibliophilic practices in the 19th century.
