HUGONIN (Pierre-Marie) - Lot 117
HUGONIN (Pierre-Marie) Paris, 1799 - Bayeux, 1884 French prelate, bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux from 1849, an important figure in Norman episcopacy in the XIXᵉ century, attentive to clergy discipline and the pastoral life of his diocese. Autograph letter signed "+ Pierre" to "Monsieur le curé". Bayeux, June 15, 1856 1 page in-4, on letterhead printed "Évêché de Bayeux", folded, old annotations at head. Letter of ecclesiastical direction, in which the bishop, apologizing for a delay caused by "a very painful day", replies to his correspondent about a priest ("your poor abbé") whose conduct is causing concern. The tone is both paternal and firm: Hugonin indicates that he is sending "yet another serious and paternal warning", but warns that, if the "deplorable defect" persists, he will be forced to "take rigorous measures against him". He concludes by calling for vigilance and prayer: "I beg him to watch over him... I pray to God for his poor soul". A revealing document on the bishop's disciplinary role in the management of parish clergy, combining pastoral solicitude and hierarchical authority. Bends, minor marginal loss without affecting the text, good condition overall.
