CRÉMIEUX (Adolphe). - Lot 55
CRÉMIEUX (Adolphe). Nîmes, 1796 - Paris, 1880. French lawyer and politician. Several times Garde des Sceaux, a major figure of liberalism under the July Monarchy and the Third Republic. Signatory of the famous Crémieux decree (1870). Autograph letter signed "Ad Crémieux", to a friend. S.l., May 10. 1 page in-8 with his initials. Interesting letter of recommendation in which Crémieux introduces his correspondent to Mr. Curnier, a former constituent and legislator, whom he presents as "a republican as well as an Orleanist" and "an ardent bibliophile worthy of you". On this occasion, he mentions a Bible from 1490, an object of bibliophilic curiosity, and underlines the desire for a meeting between the two men, declaring himself "charmed to send it to you". A doubly interesting letter, combining political networks and bibliophile circles, revealing 19th-century intellectual sociability around antiquarian books.
