COMTE (Jules). - Lot 46
COMTE (Jules). Born in Paris, 1846 - died in 1912. Art critic, general inspector of decorative arts schools, director of civil buildings, founder in 1897 of La Revue de l'Art ancien et moderne. Autograph letter signed "Jules Comte". Paris, September 10, 1881. 3 pages (¼ in-8). Interesting letter concerning an approach in favor of a certain Mr. Beyer. In it, Jules Comte frankly discusses the difficulties encountered in the procedures for appointing drawing teachers, pointing out that his administration merely presents candidates to the municipalities, which remain the decision-makers. He apologizes for the delay, which is attributed to "apparent negligence" on his part, while stressing the obstacles encountered, notably linked to the candidate's age and lack of pedagogical experience. The letter bears witness to the administrative realities and selection criteria in artistic education at the end of the 19th century, revealing the networks of influence and institutional constraints specific to the French system.
