CHEVALIER (Michel). - Lot 40
CHEVALIER (Michel). Born 1806 - died 1879. French economist, engineer and politician, member of the Institut. Autograph letter signed "Michel Chevalier", addressed to Monsieur Damiron of the Institut. Paris, May 8 (s.d.). 1 page in-8. A gracious letter of recommendation, in which Michel Chevalier introduces his correspondent to the young Émile Sicard, from Avignon, who is to sit the baccalauréat exams. He stresses the candidate's intellectual qualities, while emphasizing his shyness, and asks for his indulgent attention: "He is educated, but he is shy, and, in case of trouble, a good word would set him right". This letter, typical of the practice of recommendation in 19th-century academic circles, sheds light on the networks of influence and practices of intellectual patronage around higher education and examinations. Autograph signature.
