CACHELIN (Arthur) - Lot 28
CACHELIN (Arthur) Second lieutenant in the 3ᵉ regiment of line infantry Brevet d'ordre étranger - Chevalier de l'Ordre de Saint-Grégoire le Grand Paris, Palais des Tuileries, November 28, 1868 Important diploma on printed and calligraphed parchment, with wide historiated frame, decorated at the corners with trophies of arms and armor, and ensigned by the imperial arms under crown. The finely calligraphed text opens with the title "Ordres Étrangers" and the heading: Napoléon, par la grâce de Dieu et la volonté nationale, Empereur des Français. The document authorizes "M. Cachelin (Arthur), sous-lieutenant au 3ᵉ régiment d'infanterie de ligne" to accept and wear the decoration of chevalier de l'ordre pontifical de Saint-Grégoire le Grand, a distinction conferred by the pope. Handwritten note specifying wearing "à la boutonnière sans rosette". Beautiful polychrome vignette at the bottom of the document featuring the order's insignia, highlighted in red and gold. Dry stamp of the Grande Chancellerie. Autograph signatures of the Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor and the Secretary General of the Order. Large format (folded), with its original folds, some foxing and light marginal soiling, with no damage to the text or decoration. Attached: original cover, handwritten "Brevet ordre de St Grégoire le Grand". A remarkable Second Empire document, testifying to the diplomatic and honorary relations between imperial France and the Holy See, in a particularly meticulous decorative presentation.
