BRADEL (François Théodore) - Lot 24
BRADEL (François Théodore) Bookbinder. Handwritten document signed "Th. Bradel fils aîné" and "Touffait de la Besnerais". Paris, March 25, 1823. 2 pp. in-4 on watermarked laid paper, with revenue and dry stamps. Very interesting professional lease contract concerning the famous Paris bookbinder François Théodore Bradel, son of the Bradel dynasty, whose name remains attached to the history of French bookbinding. The deed establishes the lease, effective June 1, 1823, of a portion of an apartment and outbuildings located on rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin, comprising : "a large room and two adjoining rooms [...] plus a stable to be used as a store and a cellar". The document specifies the conditions of occupancy for a period of six years less two months, as well as the lessee's obligations: maintenance, rental repairs, payment of taxes and prohibition of subletting without written agreement. The amount of the lease is set at : seven hundred francs per year, payable every three months. A very fine set, enriched by two autograph signatures, the explicit mention of the profession of master bookbinder, and the Parisian location of the workshop. An invaluable document for the material history of bookbinding and the establishment of luxury workshops under the Restoration.
