BORNET (Jean-Baptiste Édouard) - Lot 21
BORNET (Jean-Baptiste Édouard) (1828-1911) French botanist, member of the Académie des Sciences (elected 1886). Specialist in algae and lichens, foreign member of the Royal Society (1910). Autograph letter signed Cosne (Nièvre), September 5, 1901. 1 page 1/3 in-8. Signed "Ed. Bornet". Addressed to "Monsieur le Sénateur" (Léon Labbé). Correspondence concerning an election to the Académie des Sciences Interesting letter in the context of elections to the Académie des Sciences, following the deaths of Lacaze-Duthiers and Admiral de Jonquières, leaving two seats vacant. Bornet, asked to support a candidate, adopts a cautious and measured stance: "A friend of my brother naturally has my sympathy... but at present, without knowing who the candidates will be, I cannot make a determination..." He insists on his duty of reserve, particularly in view of his scientific commitments and possible support obligations.
