BONCOMPAGNI (Ignatius). - Lot 18
BONCOMPAGNI (Ignatius). Rome, 1743 - 1790. Cardinal, Secretary of State to Pope Pius VI. Letter signed "Le card. Boncompagni", with signed autograph apostille, addressed to Bailli de Suffren. Rome, July 22, 1787. 1 1/2 pages in-4. Important diplomatic letter in which Cardinal Boncompagni regrets not having been able to meet his correspondent in Rome, and mentions a case brought before the Holy Father. He stresses that the pontifical dispositions remain in line with justice, and that no changes can be made while the case takes its course before the courts. In an added autograph apostille, however, he reaffirms his personal feelings, declaring that no occasion would be more agreeable to him than to testify to his esteem. A fine piece of pontifical chancery, combining judicial affairs and diplomatic relations with a key interlocutor, the Bailli de Suffren.
