BINGER (Louis-Gustave) - Lot 16
BINGER (Louis-Gustave) Strasbourg, 1856 - L'Isle-Adam, 1936. French officer and explorer, colonial governor, major figure in West African exploration. Autograph letter signed "G. Binger" addressed to Monsieur le Président de la Société Normande de Géographie. Paris, January 7, 1890. 1 page in-4. On the letterhead of the Cabinet du Grand Chancelier. Letter of thanks expressing Binger's gratitude for his appointment as honorary member of a regional learned society. "...You cannot believe how flattered I am by this token of high esteem and sympathy..." The letter illustrates the scholarly and geographical networks of the late 19th century, at a time when African exploration was arousing considerable interest in French geographical societies. It is set against the backdrop of the notoriety acquired by Binger following his missions in West Africa, notably his exploration of the Ivory Coast and the French Sudan. The presence of the letterhead of the Cabinet du Grand Chancelier reinforces the interest of the document, situating its author in his administrative and honorary functions within the institutions of the Republic. Good condition.
