JACQUES HOUPLAIN (1920-2020) "Shores of no return", Description: Date: 1920. Sheet size : 50 x 66 cm. Signature :Proof signed by the artist and numbered. Technique : Original etching. Print run : justified :59/140 Dry stamp of the Soc. des Peintres-Graveurs-Français. Condition : good condition French engraver and painter born in Luneray and died in Cassaignes. In 1946, Houplain was named a full member of the Jeune gravure contemporaine. He exhibited paintings at the Salon des moins de trente ans created by Madame Schilde-Bianchini. He is invited to exhibit by the Société des peintres-graveurs français at the Bibliothèque nationale and creates stained-glass cartoons for master glassmaker Barillet. Alongside his engraving work, he began studying art history. In 1947, he was awarded a scholarship to the Maison Descartes in Amsterdam, which led him to study the engraved work of Hercules Seghers, an early 17th-century Dutch engraver who influenced Rembrandt, on whom he wrote a dissertation on engravings.
