French engraver and painter born in Luneray and died in Cassaignes. In 1946, Houplain was named a full member of the Jeune gravure contemporaine. He exhibited paintings at the Salon des moins de trente ans created by Madame Schilde-Bianchini. He is invited to exhibit by the Société des peintres-graveurs français at the Bibliothèque nationale and creates stained-glass cartoons for master glassmaker Barillet.
Alongside his engraving work, he began studying art history. In 1947, he was awarded a scholarship to the Maison Descartes in Amsterdam, which led him to study the engraved work of Hercules Seghers, an early 17th-century Dutch engraver who influenced Rembrandt, on whom he wrote a dissertation on engravings.
