MORRIS and GOSCINNY. — Lucky Luke. Up the Mississippi. - Lot 134
MORRIS and GOSCINNY. — Lucky Luke. Up the Mississippi. Marcinelle-Charleroi, Éditions Dupuis, 1964. Quarto, publisher’s illustrated hardcover, square spine, 46 color plates. Lucky Luke Collection, No. 16. Reprint from 1964, bearing the copyright notice “© 1964 by Morris and Ed. J. Dupuis, Fils & Cie.” Yellow back cover featuring a list of the first 21 titles in the series, including *Les Collines noires*, the last title announced. Art by Morris and story by René Goscinny. Originally published as a graphic novel in 1961, *En remontant le Mississippi* takes Lucky Luke and his faithful horse Jolly Jumper into the picturesque world of 19th-century American river navigation. In New Orleans, Lucky Luke finds himself caught up in the rivalry between two steamboat captains vying for supremacy on the Mississippi. An eventful race ensues between the two vessels, punctuated by acts of sabotage, twists and turns, and encounters with colorful characters. Morris and Goscinny offer a humorous take on the golden age of the great paddlewheel steamboats, blending historical references, adventures, and slapstick situations. The cover depicts Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper submerged in the waters of the Mississippi, watching an imposing steamboat named the Daisy Belle pass by, while an alligator appears in the foreground. The composition, dominated by shades of blue and yellow, is one of the signature covers from the series’ classic period. Condition: Good copy. Front cover with still-vivid colors, showing some rubbing, small surface marks, and slight wear on the corners. Yellow back cover well-preserved, with some signs of use. Interior slightly yellowed, with a small yellow stain visible on the copyright page, but no other major apparent defects.
