MORRIS and GOSCINNY. — Lucky Luke. The Judge. - Lot 130
MORRIS and GOSCINNY. — Lucky Luke. The Judge. Marcinelle-Charleroi, Éditions Dupuis, 1966. In-4, publisher’s illustrated hardcover, square spine, 46 color plates. Lucky Luke Collection, No. 13. Reprint of the 1966 edition, bearing the copyright notice “© 1966 by Morris and Ed. J. Dupuis, Fils & Cie.” Front cover features a design of wooden planks, displaying eight titles from the collection, including *Billy the Kid*, *The Daltons in the Blizzard*, *The Daltons Are Still on the Run*, *The Caravan*, and *The 20th Cavalry*. Art by Morris and story by René Goscinny. Originally published as a graphic novel in 1959, *The Judge* features the famous Roy Bean, a historical figure from the American West who had proclaimed himself “the law west of the Pecos.” Lucky Luke finds himself confronted by this judge, who is as whimsical as he is arbitrary, and who dispenses justice in his own saloon, in defiance of the most basic rules. The graphic novel is loosely based on the life of the real Judge Roy Bean and represents one of the first major successes of the collaboration between Morris and Goscinny, combining humor, judicial satire, and a historical portrayal of the Wild West. The cover depicts Judge Roy Bean, dressed in his robe and wearing a black hat, reading the Civil Code behind his counter, while Lucky Luke, among the defendants, awaits his verdict. Condition: Good copy. The front cover has fresh, well-preserved colors, with a few slight signs of handling and minor scuffing at the corners. The back cover is slightly weathered, with subtle signs of wear. The interior is slightly yellowed, with no major apparent defects.
