HERRIMAN (George). — Krazy Kat. 1921–1931. - Lot 109
HERRIMAN (George). — Krazy Kat. 1921–1931. Paris, Futuropolis, 1985. Large quarto, publisher’s color-illustrated hardcover, printed spine, front cover featuring Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse in a polychrome composition, back cover illustrated with a color plate. French first edition of this retrospective collection dedicated to Krazy Kat, bringing together a selection of strips published between 1921 and 1931. Created in 1913 by American cartoonist George Herriman (1880–1944), the Krazy Kat series holds a major place in the history of comics. It depicts the unique relationships between Krazy Kat, the mouse Ignatz, and the police dog Offissa Pupp, set against the ever-changing, dreamlike landscapes of the fictional Coconino County. Through his graphic inventiveness, bold compositions, wordplay, and poetic humor, Herriman profoundly influenced the evolution of the ninth art. His work was particularly admired by numerous artists and intellectuals, including Gilbert Seldes and E. E. Cummings. This publication by Futuropolis contributes to the rediscovery in France of one of the great masters of American comics. Copyright King Features Syndicate, distributed by Agepresse. Legal deposit April 1985. A fine copy, with a crisp hardcover showing only slight signs of handling.
