RIVIÈRE (Théodore) (1857–1912). French Orientalist sculptor, - Lot 279
RIVIÈRE (Théodore) (1857–1912). French Orientalist sculptor, known for his famous group *Salammbô chez Mathô*, inspired by Gustave Flaubert’s novel. Autograph letter “Théodore Rivière” to a lady. No place, October 25, 1909. 1 page, in-12 format, on letterhead from the establishment “Les Torrents,” Saint-Raphaël-Valescure (Var). An interesting letter concerning the sculptor’s artistic work and the arrangement of a meeting. “To better complete the upcoming sculpture intended for you, I have come here, and I have been working on it for the past few days. I would be happy to show it to you.” Rivière requests a meeting with his correspondent to present the progress of a work currently in progress. This document offers a firsthand account of his work as a sculptor, particularly his private commissions and his relationships with his collectors.
