RIVIÈRE (Théodore) (1857–1912). French sculptor, born in Tou - Lot 278
RIVIÈRE (Théodore) (1857–1912). French sculptor, born in Toulouse. Orientalist artist, best known for his sculpture group *Salammbô at Mathô*. Autograph letter signed “Théodore Rivière” to a lady. Paris, May 1 [no year]. 2 pages, oblong in-16 format, on letterhead from 24 Rue de l’Yvette, Paris XVI. An interesting letter concerning a sculpture project depicting the Gallic rooster. After conducting extensive research to design a model capable of supporting a small ivory group, Rivière seeks his correspondent’s opinion on his proposals. “After much research to design a base capable of supporting the small ivory group, I believe the most attractive arrangement would be the one I am proposing for the rooster enclosed here. It is a wall-mounted piece with a rotating base. ” He proposed creating a small model or a detailed drawing to facilitate the project’s execution, assuring her that the final piece would meet the client’s expectations. An interesting insight into the sculptor’s working methods, his decorative research, and the design process for a work of art. Some old creases; in good overall condition.
