QUICHERAT (Louis). (1799–1884). French historian, archaeolog - Lot 273
QUICHERAT (Louis). (1799–1884). French historian, archaeologist, and scholar; member of the Institut. Autograph manuscript signed “L. Quicherat,” titled “Death of Malibran. Copy of the response to a question from L. Quicherat.” [Paris], May 25, 1865. 2 pages, folio size, in black ink, with numerous handwritten corrections and cross-outs. An interesting document devoted to the circumstances surrounding the death of the famous opera singer Maria Malibran (1808–1836), and in particular to the fall from a horse that is said to have precipitated her death. Quicherat refers to an account by Madame Merlin, a close friend of the singer, regarding the accident that occurred in May 1836 and its consequences for the singer’s health. He reports in particular: “It must have been between May and July 1836 that the fall from a horse occurred, which undoubtedly led to the premature death of poor Malibran. Madame Merlin recounts this sad event at length, and her account agrees—at least on the essential facts—with what her brother Manuel, my old friend, has told me on several occasions.” The manuscript also discusses Malibran’s return to London, her state of health, and the circumstances of her death. Quicherat compares several accounts, including that of Manuel García, the singer’s brother, and that of Madame Merlin, in order to clarify the chronology of events. The numerous corrections, deletions, and additions attest to a genuine effort at writing and historical research. This document is of great interest for the history of Romantic opera and for the biography of Maria Malibran, one of the most illustrious opera singers of the 19th century. A few creases and slight signs of handling.
